Since 2022, Wild Burwell has organised a wassail event at Priory Meadow in the new year.
The next wassail will be held on Saturday 11 January 2025 between 3pm and 4pm at the community orchard in Priory Meadow, Priory Close, Burwell CB25 0HW.
At this outdoor event, we wish the community orchard trees good health (wassail), we thank them for their growth in the past year, encourage them to flourish in the coming year, give each tree a small drink of apple juice and we all drink a toast to the trees with mulled apple juice (provided).
We have a Butler who leads the event, and musicians accompany the singing of a traditional song.
Our aim is merriment, and to notice and connect with our local plants and creatures. This ancient tradition was (probably) celebrated in Burwell as in other orchard-growing villages all over the countryside. By reviving it, we hope to revive ourselves as well as the trees who support all life. Wild Burwell have organised the wassail in Burwell for three years (four soon!), so it's starting to be traditional again!
Wild Burwell looks after the community orchard trees on behalf of the Parish Council, so as well as pruning them we like to encourage them with song and good wishes as well!
Please bring:
- something to make a jolly noise with, such as small percussion instruments, a saucepan lid and spoon etc
- your own small mug or cup for warm apple juice
Please dress for the weather and wear shoes or boots suitable for rough, slippery ground.
Children are very welcome and must be in the care of a responsible adult at all times. Assistance dogs welcome, and other well-behaved dogs on leads - if they don't mind a bit of noise.
